Joshua Alva Kirkman

My oldest cousin Joshua Alva Kirkman died yesterday in Beijing, China. He was a writer and a business student, studying abroad. I had been out of touch with him for years and had just reconnected with him last year at my sister’s wedding. I don’t know the circumstances of his death yet… I don’t know if his parents intend to have an autopsy done or not. He was only 32, only 2 years older than I am. I’m not entirely sure how I feel… incredibly sad, incredibly mortal.

His obituary can be seen in full here.

I knew Joshua in third grade in Titusville FL. He was very interested in writing and drawing. I remember Isaac singing, “We built this city” on my snake mountain microphone. It was terrible but we had fun encouraging him. After Joshua moved he sent me a poem about Zippy Zoe, a character he made up that looked like a fiery leaf. We lost touch, but he and I were buds back then. It sounds like he really loved life. I am sad to hear of his passing. I don’t know why he just popped in my head; it was so long ago.
