Wildflowers in the Meadow – South Carolina Botanical Gardens

We found out yesterday that my husband has been “gifted” with a one week layoff from his job. This impromptu vacation is a source of stress, of course, because our finances are already incredibly tight, and we have cinched in our belts as much as we can. I’m sure his job will be back to normal next Monday, and we’ll get over the loss of one paycheck, but in the meantime, it’s a precarious feeling, not knowing what the immediate future holds.

Today we decided to take our minds off of the job situation and drive out to the South Carolina Botanical Gardens at Clemson, SC. The botanical gardens are beautiful year-round, but never more so than in the spring and summer. The girls played around the old engine caboose by the arbor for a long time, Addah doing acrobatics while Lakin searched for interesting butterflies and insects. We walked down to the pond and fed the koi and big turtles some expired-but-not-moldy hot dog buns… which was one of the things on my “101 Things in 1,001 Days” list!

We explored the botanical gardens and meadows for a long while, stopping at the bridges and waterfalls, reading the signs that identify the many plants and trees, and marveling at the amazing colors and life around us. It was just what we needed, to step outside of our personal stresses for a few hours and just enjoy being together.

  • Next time we go, you should go with us Mama! The girls love it there,
and there’s so much to look at and enjoy. The humidity wasn’t bad at
all… it’s shady in most of the gardens and there’s a nice breeze. You
would love it, and the girls would love showing you around.
