My Top 10 Teen Crushes

I’ve had a hard week, emotionally, and I’ve been struggling with my writing, so I thought I’d go for something a little lighter, something fun to bring my mood up a little… my top 10 teen crushes!

I was inspired by Kate of Can I Get Another Bottle of Whine, who wrote a blog post about her teenage crushes.Β I’ve compiled my own list of the guys I crushed on when I was a preteen and teenager… and what a fun walk down Nostalgia Lane this was!

I give you, in no particular order, my favorite fantasy guys from 1989 to 1994!

1. Joey McIntyre
Oh my, how I adored little Joey Joe! I was a huge New Kids on the Block fan, and he was the youngest, so in my mind that meant that there was an actual possibility that he could end up with me. I mean, yeah, that makes perfect sense, right?New Kids on the Block were the first band I saw in concert. I was 11 and my Papa begrudgingly took a friend and I to the concert, where he endured two hours of being surrounded by screaming and excited preteen girls, all so I could see Joey Joe twirling and whirling on stage, only 30 feet from my fingertips!

Jordan Knight of New Kids on the Block
2. Jordan Knight
Jordan was my #2 crush, just behind Joey Joe. My favorite song was “Please Don’t Go, Girl”, because Jordan and Joey sang together oh-so-sweetly.Β He was older than Joey, practically a grown man at 16 years old. Of course, I was a lowly 11 years old at the time, so it was hard to envision the day when I would be so grown. Those chocolate brown eyes, that gorgeous voice and that luscious hair… and he’s not too shabby looking now, either!
3. River Phoenix
River captured my adoration when I first saw “Stand By Me”. Chris Chambers, the cigarette smoking good guy from a bad family made me swoon, and I watched the movie over and over. I rented every River Phoenix movie that I could find at our local Pic-A-Flick Video… A Night In the Life of Jimmy Reardon, The Mosquito Coast, My Own Private Idaho, Dogfight, Sneakers, The Thing Called Love. I was devastated when he died on Halloween in 1993.Such a beautiful soul, wasted.

4. Jared Leto
I loved to watch “My So-Called Life”, and it wasn’t just because I identified with Angela (Claire Danes) and her teenage angst. I adored Jordan Catalano’s eyes… what teenage girl in the early ’90’s didn’t? I love the movie “Girl, Interrupted”, not just because it’s a great story of one young girl’s travels through the mental health system, but also because Jared Leto’s smoldering eyes are there, begging Susanna (Winona Ryder) to run away to Canada with him.How on Earth did she refuse?
5. Jason London
I know that Jason London has an identical twin, Jeremy, and that it’s almost impossible to tell them apart. I did like Jeremy as the bad-boy boyfriend/husband of Julia (Neve Campbell), but I always preferred Jason. He was the sweet and sexy Pink in Dazed and Confused, and more importantly, the adorable and doomed Court Foster in “The Man in the Moon”. I must have watched those two movies a couple dozen times each, the summer that I was 14 years old.

Adam Duritz of Counting Crows
6. Adam Duritz
It’s no secret that my favorite band of all time is Counting Crows, and their lead man, Adam Duritz, is my long-standing crush. My papa bought me their first album, “August and Everything After”, when I was 13 years old, and I played it over and over until I wore out that first CD. I replaced it with my babysitting money, and promptly wore that CD out too. I absolute love Adam’s voice, his lyrical poetry, his goofy dreadlocks and his live performances.Adam is on “the list” for me… if he showed up at my door looking for a one night stand, I’m pretty sure I would kiss my husband good night and tell him I’d see him tomorrow.Β Heh.
7. Michael Schoeffling
I have to say, this man was the star of many an inappropriate teenage fantasy for me. His scenes with Winona Ryder in “Mermaids” were the height of steamy to my young and inexperienced mind, and I watched that movie over and again, usually when my mom was working late at night. I remember feeling very embarrassed when my mom (or god forbid, my dad) would watch that movie with me, because of the sexuality in some of the scenes.Of course, most people recognize Michael Schoeffling as Jake Ryan from “Sixteen Candles”, the hottie crush of Samantha (Molly Ringwald). I was a big fan of that one, too.

8. Corey Haim
Corey Feldman was such a cutie in “The Goonies”, and even more so in “Stand By Me”, but Corey Haim still beat him out as the cuter of the two in my book! I loved him in “License to Drive”, and even before that, as the nerdy star of “Lucas”. There was something just so appealing in his awkward grin and bright eyes!
9. Judd Nelson
I can recite “The Breakfast Club”, forward and backward, even though it’s now been years since I last saw it. Judd Nelson as John Bender was such a bad boy, the criminal, the insufferable flirt, the guy who you just knew would push you to skip school and go a little too far.And he’d be so glad that you said yes, that he’d punch the air as he walked away across the football field!

David Webb - Graphite Web
10. David Webb
My very best teen crush was my now-husband. When I met him, he was an amazing artist (then and now) who drew cartoons for the school newspaper and bashfully grinned at me when we’d pass in the hallway. He stole my heart almost 20 years ago, at the tender age of 13, and he’s still my best friend. He’s gotten even more handsome over the years, too!

I’m a 90’s baby too! I miss them.. Jordan Knight was my crush.

    • That’s cause you’ve got the right stuff! πŸ˜‰

  • Awww, I love #10, that’s so sweet. It’s so cool to see high school sweethearts still together after so many years. Beautiful. I was sad when River Phoenix died too. It still makes me sad. Yes, on Jason and Jeremy London. I researched them as potentials for my list, but they lost out to Kermit. LOL! Thanks for the shout-out.

    • lol! Thanks for the inspiration! πŸ˜€

I am so bad when it comes to names… honestly I am trying to think of my teen crushes and the only one I can come up with I can’t even think of his name. I just know he was from 90210 and he wasn’t Luke Perry. Great list!

    • Jason Priestley? Or what was his name… Brian Austin Green… he was the one who dated Donna/Tori Spelling. I didn’t watch 90210 when it first came on, but when I started watching “Party of Five”, 90210 was in the time slot before it, so I watched a lot of old episodes then. πŸ˜‰

  • I love love love Man on the Moon and nobody I know has ever seen it, so props for listing something quite obscure. At one time or another, everyone on this list made me swoon, minus Adam Duritz, maybe. I was a big Counting Crows fan, though.

I’ll tell ya though, 5 year old me thought Ralph Macchio was the STUFF in the Karate Kid. I guess I started with the crushes early, lol.

    • I just realized that I meant to say that I watched Man in the Moon a couple DOZEN times that summer… not just a couple times. I LOVED that movie, and you’re right that it’s hard to find anyone who’s even seen it! Ralph Macchio was pretty adorable… one of many reasons why I loved The Outsiders. πŸ˜‰

  • Gosh. There are so many I don’t know from your list! Am I that old? Then again, on lots of them I nodded and said to myself “Yup, totally yummy”. I had a HUGE crush on Scott Baio way back when… Joanie loves Chachi and so do I! πŸ˜‰

  • Very cute! I don’t recognize all of them b/c I’m old but love Judd Hirsch in Breakfast Club, ditto on Scott Baio.

  • I’m probably WAY older, but my biggest crush ever was Bruce Penhall. He played the little brother of one of the cops on CHIPS. I’d skip school if he was on a game show during the day just so I could gaze at him.

  • Joe Scott

Call me old. Go ahead – I’ll wait.
But my teenage crushes were people like Lea Thompson and Phoebe Cates. I take a strange pride in the fact that I only knew who about half of your list. Anyway – a fun post!

    • Psst… you’re old. πŸ˜‰ No but serious, thanks for reading, Joe! πŸ™‚

I thought, “Who’s David Webb?” lol Both “The Breakfast Club” and “Sixteen Candles” were on television the last two weekends, and I re-watched them for the 1000th time. My crush on Jake Ryan will never end!!!
Back then I also kissed the screen when I saw Ponch (Erik Estrada).

Awww you had a pretty clear ‘type’, huh? Love your #10 though. That’s the best one you put πŸ™‚

    • I definitely had (have) a clear “type” — all the guys I dated in high school and post-divorce fit the same mold, for the most part. πŸ˜‰

        Awwwww that’s cool πŸ™‚

Sadly I was too old for the teen crushes in the early 90’s and don’t know most of these but a nice bunch of eye candy just the same. Thanks for hooking up to the Hump Day Hook Up
