From Farm to Freezer – Healthy Choice Meals

It’s been a crazy couple of weeks for our family.

David has been working odd shifts at different schools around the district, filling in for others who are taking vacation or out on medical leave, so I’ve been doing even more driving than usual. When he’s working 40 minutes from home and his shift ends at 6:30 pm, it makes dinner time very hectic. Normally, we’re sitting down to eat at 6:30 or 7 at the latest, and now we’re lucky if we’re home by 7:30 pm.

I  don’t consider myself to be a fantastic cook, by any means, but I do cook about 80% of our meals from scratch and try to make them as healthy as possible, given our tight budget. Unfortunately, it’s those nights when we are out late, that we end up picking up cheap pizzas or hamburgers and fries… and everyone knows that’s not a healthy choice. That’s where frozen Healthy Choice meals come in.

David used to eat frozen meals quite a bit, back when he was a single guy, but I always thought of them as unhealthy, uninspired and heavily processed. I did a little research though, and it turns out they’re much healthier than a value meal from a fast food joint. The meals are made with simple and fresh ingredients, like vegetables that are picked at the peak of freshness, and tender, juicy meats. The vegetables in Healthy Choice meals go from farm to freezer within 24 hours. Each meal has less than 400 calories, whereas a basic fast food value meal has between 670 and 1610 calories!

Of course, there’s also the part about how I can fix dinner for the entire family in about 16 minutes (4 meals @ 4 minutes each)! That’s a lifesaver on the nights when David works late and we end up rushing dinner and showers and bedtime. It makes me feel better that at the end of a long and stressful day, our family can still sit down and eat a healthy meal within minutes of being home.

  • Oh I have eaten those meals, too and you are right in a pinch they do work. Thanks for sharing about the nutritional/health info as well, because at least I will feel a bit less guilty if I do have to make these and eat!! 🙂
