Together Again for Memorial Day

My family is {almost} all together again, and it is shaping up to be a very busy week. The first day of every month is difficult for David and I, as we are reminded that another month has ticked by since we have seen our baby girl, so busy is most welcome.

We spent our Memorial Day weekend swimming and eating barbecue chicken at my mom’s house with my sister and her little ones. The littles live with their dad in Louisiana, so it’s always a special occasion when they come to town. My niece Cori is 3.5 and the funniest kid I know. She has a huge personality and conversations with her never fail to make me laugh. Her little brother Avery will be 2 in just a couple of weeks and he loves to tell us all of the letters and colors he knows. Such a smart and handsome little man!

My youngest brother Zeb and his new wife Charlotte flew into town early on Tuesday morning from Hawaii. Zeb was deployed to Afghanistan last year for 12 months, and he will redeploy later this year for another 12 months. I don’t like to think about it, to be honest… I’m just grateful for every minute we can spend together now. My girls adore Uncle Zeb and Aunt Charlotte, and they’ve been so excited to see them.

Together Again for Memorial Day - Airport Reunion

After the airport reunion, we all gathered at Charlotte’s childhood home to meet her family and enjoy a light brunch together. I was very nervous… meeting new people is not my strong suit, but it turns out my fears were unfounded. Her parents and siblings were very nice people and they put us all at ease right away. They served a pretty awesome breakfast (complete with mimosas) too! Their house is lovely and check out that huge patch of lavender out front! Gorgeous!

Together Again for Memorial Day - Family Brunch

We all spent yesterday evening swimming and hanging out, laughing over the silliest things, like we do. It was great… like old times, when we all lived near each other and could hang out whenever we wanted, before responsibilities like work and kids and military service had to be considered.

Together Again for Memorial Day - Family Swim

This weekend, my other brother Colin, his wife Stephanie, and their kids, Abby and baby Erik, will come to town too, and we will all be together again, for the first time since last summer, and the last time for a very long time. Abby is turning 3, two days before Avery turns 2 (and my dad turns 60), so it will be a birthday-filled week as well!

We are very lucky, in spite of all that we have lost, because we have each other.
